About Mt Cook National Park
Mt Cook is the name for New Zealand’s tallest peak. In Maori the name is Aoraki, which means “cloud piercer.” This awe-inspiring giant is one of the most beautiful mountains I’ve ever seen, and that’s saying something! You can view Mt Cook from Lake Pukaki, Mt Cook Village, many of the hikes, and even by air on a helicopter or glacier flight. Mt Cook National Park is in the center of South Island, about 3 hours drive North of Queenstown and 4 hours drive southwest of Christchurch. It’s close enough to Lake Tekapo to make a day trip, especially if it is lupine flower season, Late Nov to early Dec.

The Best Hikes for elopements in Mt Cook National Park
I have a lot of favorite hikes in the world, and several of them are in Mt Cook National Park! The views are absolutely incredible, and some include New Zealand’s famous swing bridges. This is a busy area, and there may be the rare parking fee. There are hikes of every length for every skill level. I’ve seen them all, and here’s what I recommend..

HOOKER VALLEY TRACK
A mostly flat hike across 3 swing bridges to the iceberg-filled Hooker Lake. This hike is currently closed at the 2nd swing bridge, so views of Mt Cook are currently impossible.

TASMAN LAKE TRACK
Another easy hike through a gorgeous valley to Tasman Lake, where you can see Tasman glacier and many icebergs.

SEALY TARNS
Think of this more as a staircase than a hike – 2200 steps in less than 2 miles. The views are EPIC. On a clear day, this hike can’t be beat.

BLUE LAKES
This short hike is no longer maintained, so you’ll have to be the adventurous sort to make it through the brambles. But the payoff is pure New Zealand beauty and privacy.

MINAS TIRITH
An unmarked area where you can elope in front of where Minas Tirith from The Lord of the Rings was.

KEA POINT
A short hike to a viewpoint of Mt Cook. Best in the morning or at sunset, it can be rather busy during the day.
